Oregon takes on Mississippi State in South Regional action

03/21/2008 - Little Rock, AR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Winners of the very first NCAA Tournament back in 1939, the Oregon Ducks shoot for just their second trophy as they contend against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the 70th annual event at Alltel Arena in Little Rock.

The ninth-seeded Ducks, who defeated Ohio State in the first-ever NCAA Tournament in Evanston, Illinois by a score of 46-33, enters this year's event with a record of 12-8 in the tourney overall. As far as the 2007-08 campaign was concerned, the Ducks managed to come away with a record of 9-9 in Pac-10 play, facing nationally-ranked programs on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the team was one-and-done in the conference tournament with a 75-70 loss to Washington State at the Staples Center last week.

As for the eight-seeded Bulldogs, the majority of their 10 setbacks this season were against opponents who made the field of 65. The program, which lost to Georgia during the SEC Tournament by just four points (64-60), won five of the six games leading up to that meeting. However, the fact that MSU went to overtime in three of those games had to be taxing on the squad.

The winner of this first-ever meeting advances to the second round on Sunday to face the winner of the Texas-Arlington/Memphis contest as part of the South Region.

One of three players on the Oregon roster who has tallied at least 1,000 points in his career, Malik Hairston led the team in scoring this season with his 16.1 ppg, thanks in large part to 43.8 percent accuracy behind the three- point line. But more than that Hairston, who made good on 53.1 percent from the floor overall, was third on the unit with 4.8 rpg. Maarty Leunen, another of the 1,000-point scorers, accounted for 15.2 ppg this season as he made good on a stellar 50.9 percent of his three-point tries. Leunen, who is the active rebounding leader in the conference, paced the Ducks with his 9.2 boards per game and was second on the unit with 88 assists. Tajuan Porter (13.8 ppg) and Bryce Taylor (13.0 ppg) complete the list of double-digit scorers for Oregon, a team that outscored opponents by a mere 4.4 ppg this season even though the squad knocked down a collective 40.1 percent from three-point range.

A member of the All-SEC First Team this season according to the league's coaches, Jamont Gordon has more than earned that accolade by placing sixth in the SEC in scoring with 17.3 ppg. But more than just a scorer who played more than 34 minutes per game, Gordon also led the program with 154 assists and was third on the squad with his 6.3 rpg. Charles Rhodes, who also earned first team honors, was right behind Gordon in the scoring column with his 16.9 ppg. The top rebounder for the program with better than seven and a half boards per contest, Rhodes was someone who didn't always know what to do with the ball once it was in his possession, leading to an unsightly 72 turnovers, against a mere 27 assists in as many starts. Barry Stewart (11.6 ppg) and Ben Hansbrough (10.4 ppg) completed the list of double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs, a team that held foes to a mere 36.8 percent shooting from the field and outscored them by eight points per game.
