Seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela charged past Spaniard Alberto Martin 6-1, 6-3, while unseeded Argentine Diego Hartfield topped his eighth- seeded countryman Jose Acasuso, the 2001 runner-up here, 6-3, retired. Hartfield qualified for Friday's quarterfinals when Acasuso quit with a right elbow injury.
In other round-robin play, Brazilian Flavio Saretta reached the quarterfinals by sneaking past Czech Jiri Vanek 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello bested Italian Stefano Galvani 6-2, 6-4 and Argentine Juan Monaco leveled Italian Potito Starace 6-3, 6-4. The lucky-loser Vanek replaced third-seeded Argentine Agustin Calleri (back injury ) in the draw. Calleri reached the final here in 2002.
This week's tournament is a 32-player round-robin draw which consisted of a 16-player "play-off," with eight winners joining 16 other players to make up eight groups of three players. Each player then plays two guaranteed matches in the round-robin stage. The winner from each group will advance to the knockout round (quarterfinals), and then will play out the event per a traditional single-elimination format.
The 2007 Copa Telmex winner will collect $66,450.
