Kings win wild one in shootout over Coyotes

Hockey Betting Lines

03/21/2008 - Glendale, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Patrick O'Sullivan scored in the fourth round of the shootout as the Los Angeles Kings blew a two-goal lead but recovered to top the Phoenix Coyotes, 6-5.

Both squads were kept off the board in the first three rounds of the shootout, before O'Sullivan beat Mikael Tellqvist with a stick side forehand blast. Doan tried to slip the puck behind Erik Ersberg, but the goaltender clamped his left leg to the goalpost and turned back the attempt.

O'Sullivan added a pair of assists for the Kings, who entered the game having lost nine of 11. Tom Pressing scored a pair in the first period, while Dustin Brown, Raitis Ivanans and Peter Harrold also tallied.

Alexander Frolov recorded a pair of helpers, and Ersberg stopped 35-of-40 shots to earn the win.

Shane Doan had a goal and two assists for the Coyotes, who have lost four straight. Keith Ballard, Steve Reinprecht, Enver Lisin and Keith Yandle also scored, and Tellqvist allowed five goals on 36 shots.

After a six-goal flurry in the second, neither team scored until the Coyotes had a 6-on-4 advantage with Matt Ellis in the penalty box for hooking and Tellqvist on the bench in favor of an extra attacker.

Doan powered into the zone along the left boards and fired a centering pass to Ballard, who one-timed the puck past Ersberg to force a 5-5 tie with 24.6 seconds remaining and send the game to overtime.

Neither team managed to push across the deciding goal in the five minute overtime, forcing the shootout.

Preissing put the Kings on top 8:24 into the first period, controlling a rebound of Frolov's shot and firing a backhander into the back of the net.

Lisin tied the game just about 3 1/2 minutes later, redirecting a pass from Peter Mueller past Ersberg for a power-play goal, Lisin's second marker of the season.

Preissing picked up his second goal of the period on the power play with 41.9 seconds remaining, rifling a wrister from the slot through a screen and past Tellqvist to give the Kings a 2-1 lead after one.

Phoenix again used the power play to tie the game, with Yandle blasting a snap shot past Ersberg at the 6:05 mark of the second period. Brown countered just under 2 1/2 minutes later, ripping a slapper past Tellqvist for a shorthanded marker that restored LA's one-goal advantage.

The Kings stretched their lead to 4-2 one minute, 19 seconds later as Frolov forced a takeaway in the Phoenix zone and slipped a pass to Ivanans, who beat Tellqvist with a wrister.

Reinprecht's redirection of a Ballard shot cut the lead to 4-3 with 8:35 left in the period, but Harrold pushed the lead back to two just 39 seconds later.

Phoenix capped the wild second period by converting on a 5-on-3 power play with 2:34 left in the frame, as Doan slammed an errant shot from Mueller into the back of the net to bring the Coyotes within 5-4 after 40 minutes of play.

Game Notes

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook

Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds.  The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.

Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.

Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
