Hewitt wins, Blake goes down in Vegas

02/28/2007 - Las Vegas, NV (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Lleyton Hewitt stormed past Vincent Spadea, but James Blake rolled snake eyes in defeat during round-robin action Tuesday at the $416,000 Tennis Channel Open.

The second-seeded Hewitt posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory, but the top seed wasn't as lucky.

Blake went down in the desert night, falling to Evgeny Korolev 6-2, 6-4. The defending champion Blake had much better success last year in Las Vegas, downing Hewitt in the final.

Former world No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia equaled Hewitt with a round-robin victory Tuesday. The third-seeded two-time Grand Slam champion dismissed Austrian Stefan Koubek 7-5, 6-2 at Darling Tennis Center.

Seventh-seeded Brit Tim Henman made a successful 2007 season debut by drubbing Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-1, 6-2. Playing his first tennis since October, the 32-year-old Henman had been sidelined with a hamstring injury, which forced him to miss last month's Australian Open.

A mild upset came when Czech Jan Hernych toppled eighth-seeded German Benjamin Becker 6-3, 7-5.

Additional round-robin wins came for Chilean qualifier Paul Capdeville and Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

This week's event is a 32-player round-robin, which consisted of a 16-player "play-off" where the eight winners joined 16 other players to make-up eight groups of three players. Each player will play two guaranteed matches in the round-robin stage, with the winner from each group advancing to the quarterfinals, where the tournament will be played out per a traditional single-elimination format.
