03/19/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Montreal Canadiens hope their recent dominance of the Ottawa Senators can help them snap a three-game losing streak, as the Habs visit their Northeast Division rivals tonight at Scotiabank Place.
The Canadiens are 4-0 against Ottawa this year and have won six straight in the series dating back to last season. Montreal has also won its last three contests in Canada's capital city, including a pair of shootout victories in Ottawa this season.
Montreal has lost three in a row, but has picked up at least a point in three of four contests (1-1-2) since general manager Bob Gainey took over head coaching duties from the fired Guy Carbonneau last week. The Canadiens have 81 points on the season and are tied with Carolina for the final two playoff berths in the Eastern Conference.
The Habs were last in action on Tuesday night when they dropped a shootout decision against the visiting New York Rangers. Chris Drury notched the game- winner in the third round of the shootout, as the Rangers clipped Montreal, 4-3.
After Montreal's Andrei Markov began the round with a goal to tie the shootout at two-apiece, Drury beat Carey Price with a sizzling wrister from the slot to ice the game for New York.
Alex Kovalev, Maxim Lapierre and Markov tallied once each for the Canadiens, while Price took the loss despite a strong 39-save performance.
The loss to New York capped a four-game homestand for Montreal, but the Habs won't be away from the Bell Centre long as they are scheduled to begin a five- game residency Saturday against Toronto. The Canadiens are just 15-18-3 as the guest this year.
The Senators, meanwhile, have been playing terrific hockey as of late, but it may not be enough to get the club into the postseason for a 12th consecutive season. With 68 points, Ottawa is currently 12th in the East and 13 points out of a playoff berth.
Ottawa has won two straight and six of its last seven games and is coming off Tuesday's victory over visiting Buffalo. Brendan Bell scored two of the three Ottawa power-play goals as the Senators held off the Sabres, 4-2.
Daniel Alfredsson chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Dany Heatley also lit the lamp for Ottawa, which was coming off a 4-3 shootout win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Filip Kuba dished out three helpers in the win.
Brian Elliott stopped 11-of-13 shots between the pipes for Ottawa and the rookie improved to 13-4-3 this season.
Jason Spezza also added a pair of assists in the win and extended his point streak to seven games. He has three goals and seven helpers during the tear.
Tonight's test marks the middle segment of a three-game homestand for the Sens, who will also host the New York Islanders on Sunday. Ottawa is 18-12-6 as the host this year and has won its last five games on home ice.
