03/21/2008 - Little Rock, AR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Making their 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the Texas Longhorns go after the Austin Peay Governors in first- round action in the South Region at Alltel Arena in Little Rock this afternoon.
An impressive 13-4 in first-round games of the tourney since it expanded to 64 teams in 1985, the second-seeded Longhorns defeated both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma during the Big 12 Conference Tournament last week after winning the regular season title for the second time in the last three seasons. However, the title game pitted Texas against Kansas yet again, with the Jayhawks picking up the 84-74 win in Kansas City.
As for the Governors, who are just 2-6 in this tourney all-time, they earned their way to the "Big Dance" by disposing of Tennessee State by a score of 82-64 in the title game of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The 15th seed in this 70th annual event, APSU is facing a top-10 team for the second time this season, having fallen to Memphis back in November by a score of 104-82.
In 25 all-time appearances in the tournament, Texas has produced a record of 29-28, but has yet to bring home the trophy. The survivor of this first-ever meeting will hit the floor again on Sunday versus the winner of the Saint Mary's-CA/Miami-Florida bout in the second round.
A member of the All-OVC First Team this season, Drake Reed led the Governors in scoring with his 14.6 ppg and was also a leader on the glass for the group with more than five and a half rebounds per contest as well. Derek Wright, who was chosen to the All-OVC Second Team, accounted for 11.7 ppg as he shot almost as well from three-point range (.411) as he did from the floor overall (.438) over the course of 34 starts. Wright has some of the quickest hands in the Ohio Valley, responsible for a team-best 162 assists and a stellar 89 steals. As someone who took all but 34 of his 293 field goal attempts behind the three-point line this season, where he knocked down 38.2 percent of his tries, Todd Babbington was one of three more players scoring in double figures for the Govs with his 11.6 ppg, followed by Wes Channels (11.0 ppg) and Fernandez Lockett (10.9 ppg).
A finalist for both the Bob Cousy Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, as well as a pick for a number of First Team All-America squads, D.J. Augustin demonstrated why he is probably the most valuable point guard in the college game. Just a sophomore, Augustin cracked the school's top-20 scoring list, now showing 1,177 points to rank 19th. He placed first in the Big 12 in assists with 5.7 per game and was second in scoring with just under 20 points per contest. A speedy and dynamic ball handler, the fact that Augustin can break down a defense and work his way to the basket allows someone like Connor Atchley to spend his time around the three-point line instead of the paint. A.J. Abrams (16.1 ppg) is on the floor to fire up shots from three-point range and Damion James (13.2 ppg, 10.5 rpg), one of only a handful of players nationally averaging a double-double, is meant to be there on the glass in case the perimeter shots fail to fall.

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.

“You play to win the game!”
Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.
The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.
The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.
Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?
Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.
Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.
Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.
Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.
The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.
Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.
Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.
This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.
First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”
The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.
Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
